Boy, 17, Jumps From GWB Before Police Can Get To Him

FORT LEE, N.J. -- Port Authority police officers valiantly rushing to the upper level of the George Washington Bridge on an attempted suicide report early Wednesday saw a 17-year-old boy jump over the side.

The Manhattan teen dashed toward the New York tower on the south walkway and went over the railing in a split-second, authorities said.

NYPD divers recovered his body, which was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, the Port Authority's Joseph Pentangelo told Daily Voice.

It was the 9th confirmed suicide of the year at the bridge (there were 18 each of the past two years). Port Authority police have also prevented 53 others in 2016, Pentangelo said.

The incident caused traffic delays, which became worse after a tractor-trailer spill less than an hour later.
