Home Burglaries Strike Again In Thornwood

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Home burglaries continue to hit the Mount Pleasant area, with two occurring on Warren Avenue in Thornwood earlier this week.

In one case, two men attempted to enter a house while a woman was home.

On Aug. 13, police say a woman living on Warren Avenue reported her doorbell rang multiple times. After she did not answer, two men attempted to enter her home through a screen window, police said . The men were confronted by the homeowner and fled the area, police said. Mount Pleasant Police Department Chief Louis Alagno said the woman described the men as two Hispanic teenagers and did not have any other descriptive features on the individuals.

Checking if the owners are home first is common practice for burglars, Alagno said.

“They’ll ring the doorbell a few times to see if anyone’s home and if you answer the door they’ll usually just say they were looking for someone else,” Alagno said. “And if you don’t answer, they’ll go right in assuming no one is home.”

Later that evening, police said another home was burglarized on Warren Avenue while the homeowners were out. The resident reported that among the items stolen were a laptop computer, a Nook e-reader, assorted jewelry and around $40 in cash.

Alagno added that an attempted burglary occurred Tuesday on Rolling Hills Road in Thornwood. The resident reported access was gained into their house by breaking a window on the garage, but no items were stolen.

The burglaries add to a growing list of incidents in Mount Pleasant the past two weeks.  No arrests have been made in the incidents and Alagno said they still are being investigated.
