A child's finger got caught in a water jet at the Mount Pleasant Town Pool, but he was freed during a four-hour rescue effort.

The pool remained closed on Thursday for repairs.

The 6-year-old boy was safely transported to an area hospital about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police said in a news release.

The 5:20 p.m. accident prompted the pool's closure to the public at 125 Lozza Drive. Volunteers from the Valhalla Fire Department and Valhalla Ambulance Corps were assisted by a Westchester County Technical Rescue crew and paramedics from Westchester Emergency Medical Services who dismantled parts of the pool to free the boy. His mother was present and in the pool throughout the rescue, according to Mount Pleasant Police Chief Paul Oliva.

Firefighters cut out a portion of the pool wall to help extricate the boy, who was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for treatment, police said.

Paramedics and emergency medical technicians monitored the boy's vital signs throughout the rescue, Chief Oliva added.

Doctors are optimistic about the boy's full recovery from his injuries, according to Oliva.
