Port Authority Heavy Weapons Units Sent to GWB, Tunnels, Airports

FORT LEE, N.J. -- Port Authority police on Monday afternoon deployed several heavy weapons teams to all access points of the George Washington Bridge, as well as at the tunnels and airports in New Jersey and New York, Daily Voice has learned.

No specific threat provoked the response -- rather, it was "the events in Linden this morning" that promoted officials to "hold over entire tours to improve security," a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the deployments said.

Besides the GWB, they were deployed to the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the Port Authority bus stations and the area airports -- Newark, JFK and LaGuardia, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo confirmed.

Citizens shouldn't be alarmed, authorities emphasized.

"These [terrorist] cells in an evolving condition, so we're doing this as a precaution," a source told Daily Voice about the deployments. "Entire tours are being held over."

Hours earlier, a 28-year-old Elizabeth man wanted for questioning in connection with Saturday night's bombings in midtown Manhattan and Seaside Park, as well as several bombs found at a train station near his home, was captured after a shootout in Linden.

Expect to see increased PAPD presence at the GWB upper and lower levels, as well as the Palisades Interstate Parkway access ramp.
