Simple Ways To Avoid Burglaries In Mount Pleasant

VALHALLA, N.Y. – With multiple home burglaries taking place over the past week throughout Mount Pleasant, Police Chief Louis Alagno said there are simple steps that residents can take to deter burglaries.

“It’s important to secure your home, and place your valuables in a secure spot,” Alagno said. “Burglars are pretty good at finding items, so it’s key to find a really good hiding spot.”

Over the past week, five home burglaries have occurred in Mount Pleasant, all during the daytime. The stolen item of choice in the burglaries was jewelry. The most recent occurred on Thursday, Aug. 9, at a home on Locust Road in Pleasantville. Alagno said jewelry is very common for burglars to take, as it is easy to transport out of the home and the high price of gold is lucrative.

Investigations into the home burglaries continue, and it has yet to be determined if they are connected, Alagno said.

Besides securing your home when it’s vacant, Alagno said, using the buddy system can be one of the most effective ways to prevent a home burglary.

“The most important thing really is to just be a nosy neighbor,” Alagno said. “If you see someone in your neighborhood that looks suspicious or someone at your neighbor’s house that you don’t think should be there, give us a call.”

The following items also were reported by Mount Pleasant police:

DWI: Alex Delgado, 26 of Hawthorne was charged Sunday, Aug. 12, with driving while intoxicated. Police said Delgado was initially pulled over for driving at night with his headlights off.

Vandalism: A resident of Elwood Avenue in Hawthorne reported that a Corona beer bottle was thrown through a second-story window of the home during the overnight hours of Sunday, Aug. 12. The bottle smashed the window and screen, and police said it caused an estimated $500 worth of damage.
