Democratic County Exec Candidates Square Off In First Debate

Ken Jenkins and George Latimer, who are facing off in the Democratic primary for county executive, can agree on one thing: neither thinks incumbent Republican Rob Astorino, who is running for a third term, should remain on the job.

Jenkins, a county legislator, and Latimer, a state senator, took part in a debate Tuesday at the Chappaqua Library before their Sept. 12 primary. The winner faces Astorino in the general election.

Latimer said Astorino has taken the county in the wrong direction and tied him to President Donald Trump, according to LoHud. Astorino endorsed Trump last year during the presidential election.

Jenkins, who sought the nomination for county executive in 2013, said Democrats can't do what they did in 2009 and 2013 and expect a different result, according to LoHud. Jenkins would be the first black county executive.

Both candidates criticized Astorino's lawsuit to prevent the closure of Indian Point, said they would ban gun shows on county owned property and said they had reservations about a plan to privatize Westchester County Airport, according to LoHud.
