With George Latimer (D-Rye) being sworn in as Westchester County Executive, he resigned his senate seat, which represents the 37th district.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo must now set a date for a special election.

Four Democrats have announced their candidacy: Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, West Harrison resident Mark Jaffe, teacher Kat Brezler and Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick. Democrats will choose their nominee on Jan. 9.

On the Republican side, only Sarmad Khojasteh, a Bedford attorney, has announced his candidacy.

Brezler sent out a statement Tuesday calling for Cuomo to schedule a special election before the budget vote on April 1.

"The residents of District 37 deserve to have a seat at the table while we negotiate a $150 billion dollar budget," Brezler said.

The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.
