PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. The Pleasantville Board of Trustees is considering further restricting parking outside the Mount Pleasant Public Library to increase safety on Romer Avenue.
The library is a problem at dismissal time, particularly in the parking lot area, Trustee Colleen Griffin Wagner said at last weeks village board meeting. Folks are using the library for a pickup spot for their kids.
The trustees set a public hearing for their next meeting that will consider further restricting the on-street parking on Romer Avenue for about 50 to 60 feet on the north end of the library entrance going toward Pleasantville High School and Middle School. The proposed plan will restrict parking in that area from around 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the school year. The idea is to make the area safe from cars while children in the nearby schools are walking in the morning and at dismissal.
On top of safety for schoolchildren, the trustees said the library board has complained that the current parking laws make it difficult for library patrons to get in and out of the parking lot.
You cant make a right out of the library parking lot when cars are parked there, Griffin Wagner said. Its impossible.
Trustee Brian Skarstad, who lives on Romer Avenue, said he was hesitant to take away the parking because it hasnt presented the village with a major problem.
The problem I see is that although it is a very congested area at times, its also a very slow area, Skarstad said. But right now, kids arent getting hit and its OK there.
The public hearing is scheduled for the next village board meeting at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at Village Hall on Wheeler Avenue. Residents are encouraged to attend to give their opinions and ask questions on the plan.
