"It is completely eroded there now," Berard said. "It's right near Nannyhagen Stream and there's a tremendous amount of runoff and it's a flood area that floods terribly."
Berard said the area of concern is just beyond Lake Street's intersection with Broadway, where cars and construction vehicles frequently park next to the old Pleasantville water pumping station. There is no area on the street for cars to park, and residents frequently use the grass alongside the road. Berard said the frequent parking has caused erosion to the grass, which in turn causes flooding during storms.
The village is proposing a local law that would prohibit on-street parking on the south side of the street from the Broadway intersection to the village border just beyond Nannyhagen Park.
The issue, Berard said, is that many residents park on the street during the summer while using Pleasantville's village pool.
"We've always had concerns about whether you can place a no-parking zone there," Berard said.
The village is considering a clause that would suspend the parking law during the summer months to allow residents to park and use the pool, or prohibit parking only in the areas of concern.
Village Administrator Patti Dwyer said cars shouldn't park on Lake Street at any time of year, but especially during the winter when there is plowing and storm cleanup. There just isn't any room, she said.
"That's the issue," Dwyer said. "There's not really a shoulder area there. You really have to pull completely off the road and into the grass."
The Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing on the parking law at its next scheduled meeting Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. in Village Hall.
