Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree

Because it’s Christmas in July, anyone who shows up at Rowley’s Tavern on Friday night wearing a Santa hat and a Hawaiian shirt gets a free Budweiser, provided they’re of age, of course. To help get everyone in the holiday spirit, the guys have strung lights and put up the Christmas tree. The band “Fake ID” will be playing that night— though probably not Christmas carols.

“This is a fun place to be, it has a really fun environment,” said Zack Bloom, the manager and one of the masterminds behind Friday night’s party.

And since it is Christmas, there has to be presents. Norwalk Community College students will get two-for-appetizers if they show their school ID. Dave Edelson, assistant manager, said everyone would receive one raffle ticket for each Bud or Bud light they order and Zack and Dave will raffle off prizes all evening. The best present comes at midnight when they will give away a red kayak with the Budweiser logo.

“And yes, you do have to be here to win it,” said Dave.

Rowley’s, located at 280 Connecticut Ave., has been around for almost four years and they’ve drawn a steady crowd, said Dave. Their first ever Christmas in July party is an opportunity to welcome new friends.

“We want people to know they have an alternative to downtown,” he said. “And there’s never a cover charge.”

Rowley’s does have 10 flat-screen TVs with Direct TV, which means multiple games are visible at the same time. They have pool, darts and Nintendo Wii. Their kitchen serves a full menu and the staff that has been there almost since the place opened, which makes it feel like family. And there really is a Mr. Rowley. His name is Fergus Rowley and his family crest hangs on the wall.
