Stay Safe and Warm During Cold and Snow Snap

Arctic air has once again settled over Connecticut -- and there's more to come. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to keep in mind as the frigid weather knocks on doors, windows and mittens.

Limit time outside during extreme cold. Dress in layers, wear gloves or mittens, and wear a hat that covers your ears. Wear waterproof boots and keep clothing dry to maintain its insulating properties.

Pets are very vulnerable to the cold. Never leave them outside for extended periods of time.

Be careful when heating your home. The risk with space heaters is that they can overload electrical outlets when heaters are on. Be sure to keep them at least three feet away from combustible materials like draperies, furniture and bedding. And never leave space heaters operating unattended. They can be knocked over by children or pets or can overheat, causing fires.

Also, don't leave a fire unattended in a fireplace. Use a protective screen in front of any fireplace when it is in use. And chimneys need to be regularly cleaned and inspected to avoid chimney fires.

If you have a newer, direct-vent furnace that vents through walls rather than up a conventional chimney, make sure its air intake and exhausts are not blocked by accumulated snow outside your home. Blocking these vents creates risk of deadly carbon monoxide buildup.

How do you keep yourself warm when you venture outside during cold snaps? Or do you forsake outdoor activities completely during such toe-numbing cold? Let me know.
