According to the school district, more than 740 test samples were taken from the district’s six schools in September and October yielding proof that dangerous levels of lead were present at numerous water sources in each building.
At the time, officials said many of the worst samples were taken from sinks not typically used for drinking water.
After taking “corrective action” to eliminate the problem, the school district independently retested the 76 offending locations and found that conditions had improved.
Alarming lead levels were eliminated in all of the district’s schools except for Robert E. Bell Middle School, according to the district, which said that high lead levels remain in six water sources – five science classroom sinks and one storage closet sink.
In addition to placing labels over the sinks saying “Do Not Drink From This Faucet, Hand Washing Only,” the district said it will replace the pipes to those sinks in the summer when the classrooms are to be renovated.
