In recognition of National Fire Prevention Month, members of the Pocantico Hills Fire Department, gave a school-wide presentation at the school on Oct. 14.

Kids in grades K to 8 learned about fire safety from Fire Chief Joe Mahood and Firefighter Jennifer Gill Mahood, who came wearing full firefighting gear.

"Becoming familiar with the appearance of firefighters in their suits is very important, said Jennifer Gill Mahood

“So many children perish during a fire because they are hiding,” she said.

The students were also encouraged to handle the mask apparatus during the event.

Chief Mahood reminded his young audience to talk with their families about an emergency plan, a fire drill as a family, and replacing the battery in their smoke detectors.

Students and families in the school community are encouraged to pay a visit to the firehouse to explore and learn more; just call ahead, said the release.
