Approximately 4,000 students who scored exceptionally well on the SAT or the ACT were identified as candidates in the academic component; the National YoungArts Foundation nominated 60 students in the arts component; and each state’s chief school officer nominated up to five candidates each in the career and technical education component, new for 2016.
In Westchester County, 33 public school students received invitations: 32 in the academic component and one, McCarthy, in the arts. Only five students from New York State were nominated in the arts component.
All candidates must complete and submit candidacy materials to a review committee of qualified individuals who will evaluate the candidates on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities, and the quality and content of their essay.
The committee will select approximately 800 candidates as semifinalists and forward their names and materials to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.
After its review in April, the Commission will name up to 161 Presidential Scholars: 121 in the academic component- one male and one female per state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Families Living Abroad plus fifteen at-large ; 20 in the arts component; and 20 in the career and technical education component.
In June, the Presidential Scholars will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. where they will be awarded the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
