Four Vie for Three Seats on Mount Pleasant School Board

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Four candidates, including one challenger, are competing for three spots on the Mount Pleasant Central School District Board of Education.

Superintendent Susan Guiney said she welcomes a contested election.

“It’s always good when you see that citizens of our community are eager to serve their schools,” Guiney said.

Among the three incumbents running for re-election is Theresa Fowler, the board president. Jim Grieco and Vincent D’Ambroso also are running for re-election.

Thomas McCage, the moderator and founder of the Mount Pleasant community interest group and website , is challenging the incumbents. In October, he questioned a five-year employment contract given to Guiney in June.

Voters will choose three of the candidates during the election on May 15. The winners will serve three-year terms beginning July 1.

Fowler, a resident of Hawthorne for 43 years, was elected to the board in 2009. She says that she hopes to be re-elected to see completion of some of the district’s goals included in the current five-year plan to improve education.

“I feel in my heart the last three years were a rewarding experience as the district continues to move forward in a positive way,” said Fowler, who is a bus driver for the district. “My heart belongs to Mount Pleasant, and for the last three years the Mount Pleasant schools.”

Grieco has lived in Thornwood for 44 years and is currently the vice president of the Board of Education. He said he hopes to be re-elected to help Mount Pleasant schools maintain success.

“I’m running again to help continue what this current board started three years ago,” Grieco said. “To help ensure that we maintain our current programs and facilities as needed so that our students, teachers and administrators have the tools and resources needed.”

In addition to serving on the Board of Education, D’Ambroso is on the district's Legislative Advocacy Committee and the Westchester Putnam School Board Association Legislation Action Council in addition to being a resident of Thornwood for 20 years.

Registered voters in the Mount Pleasant school district will be able to vote May 15 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Westlake High School gym, 825 Westlake Drive, Thornwood.
