THORNWOOD, N.Y. – After spending a year as the interim principal of Westlake Middle School in Thornwood, Superintendent Susan Guiney will recommend Robert Hendrickson to remain as the permanent principal.
“Dr. Hendrickson has an extensive administrative experience, especially at the middle school level,” Guiney said Tuesday.
Guiney’s recommendation will come in front of the Mount Pleasant Central School District Board of Education at its regular public meeting Wednesday night. After the recommendation, the board will receive comments from the public before voting on the matter. Guiney said that Hendrickson has 14 years of education administrative experience and previously served as the interim principal of Pleasantville High School before coming to Westlake.
Hendrickson moved in to the principal position at Westlake Middle School after previous principal Jerry Schulman became principal at Hawthorne Elementary School at the end of the 2011 school year. During the past year at Westlake, Guiney added that Hendrickson implemented a new bullying prevention program, aided in adding core curriculum standards, and oversaw the alignment of daily schedules with Westlake High School.
Guiney said the original choice to hire Hendrickson on an interim basis was to reevaluate many aspects of the school.
“The district’s purpose in hiring an interim administrator for this school year was to be able to take the necessary time to assess the needs and direction of the middle school and determine the proper fit of its personnel,” Guiney said.
Guiney is confident now that Hendrickson will be the best person going forward for the middle school.
“Dr. Hendrickson has demonstrated the leadership, temperament and vision that will best serve Westlake Middle School, its students, families and staff,” Guiney said.
The board of education meeting will take place Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Westlake Library.
