Hawthorne Elementary Celebrates Earth Day Through Green Initiatives

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. – Hawthorne Elementary School students will celebrate going green and recycling initiatives this week in honor of Earth Day, including a celebration of Waste-Free Lunch Day on Friday.

Students are asked to bring a lunch Friday using only reusable items such as a reusable lunch bag or box, Thermoses and reusable water bottles, utensils and containers.  Students are asked to avoid plastic bags, wrap, aluminum foil, throw-away bags and juice boxes.

The green celebration continues Monday in a parade down Memorial Drive when the school holds its sixth annual Walk the Green Walk.

Students and staff with banners and decorated t-shirts will follow the high school band, which leads the parade. The entire school, kindergarten through second grade, will walk from Hawthorne Elementary at 8:30 a.m. on Memorial Drive to the Hawthorne Fire House on the corner of Elwood Avenue and Chelsea Street.

The school’s PTA Go Green committee members are also expected to weigh the students’ trash earlier during the week.
