Hawthorne ES Students Mix Magic With Math

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Hawthorne Elementary School students were treated on Monday to "MatheMagic!," a PTA Cultural Arts event, that had them adding and subtracting like magic.

The fast-paced program had the K-2 crowd computing and laughing at the same time. MatheMagic's Bradley Fields showed children how numbers and the place value system were formed.

He demonstrated fractions through his "rope trick" and talked about shapes as he took them on a trip back to the Egyptian pyramids. In between the fun, the students learned that math, like Fields, is magic and teacher Bob Bendlin's head can really make change.
