Dr. Susan Cowles-Dumitru received the grant for professional and curriculum development in January.

The six grants were awarded for projects that focused on implementing Common Core standards and assessments and developing standards-based practices for improved student achievement.

Dr. Cowles-Dumitru, who is the IB coordinator for the middle school, teamed up with science teacher Lawrence McIntyre for a project called "The Art & Science of Light & Shadow."

When the project is implemented later this year, art and science students will examine the sun’s path and its relation to time of day, seasons, and latitude.

For the science strand, they will create scientifically accurate sundials that correspond to the summer and winter solstices, and the equinoxes.

The project’s artistic strand will allow students to design a sundial inspired by an artist who is a master of light and shadow.
