THORNWOOD, N.Y. - Teachers and students in the Mount Pleasant Central School District have created multiple drives to help in relief efforts for the many people around the greater New York metropolitan area who were left ravaged by Hurricane Sandy.
At Westlake High School, the Habitat for Humanity Club has collected donations of food and other goods and already sent two shipments to the area of Rockaway Beach, N.Y..
The following items of need are still being collected: socks, gloves, winter hats, cleaning supplies and baby-care items.
Any residents who wish to make a donation can drop off items in the Westlake High School guidance office during school hours.
Monetary donations can also be made. Checks should be made out to Mt. Pleasant Student Activity Fund. All monetary donations will go directly to affected areas throughout New York through the American Red Cross or Salvation Army.
Westlake Middle School and Hawthorne Elementary School students have also organized a donation drive of similiar items that also includes non-perishable food, toiletries and garbage bags. A drop off location is in the main lobby of each school.
At Columbus Elementary School, students and teachers are collecting school supplies for Rhame Avenue Elementary School in East Rockaway, N.Y. Students in this elementary school have been relocated to a nearby school in another district and many are left without basic school supplies. Columbus is asking for donations of backpacks, lunch boxes as well as other school supplies such as pencils, pens and paper. A donation box is set up in the school's lobby.
For more information on any of the donation drives, residents should visit the district website or call 914-769-3733.
