THORNWOOD, N.Y. The Mount Pleasant Central School District is installing a new high-tech security system that Superintendent Susan Guiney said will make it easier to keep students safe.
This security system is really just about making everything run much more efficiently than it already does, Guiney said.
The system, which is funded by an EXCEL grant, will keep a watchful eye on the exterior of each of the districts four buildings. The money comes from leftover funds that were used from the renovations of the Westlake library. Security cameras will be installed outside near all exit doors and building workers and administrators will be able to view the footage of everyone who goes in and out throughout the day. Guiney said an alarm will also be set up at the doors and will go off if any locked door is open when it should not be. To open the doors, the typical key and lock system will be replaced by a card swipe system.
Guiney said the new security camera system will not only be used as a monitor throughout the day, but also to check on archives.
It allows us to go back and look through some footage in case that we need to work with the Mount Pleasant Police Department in an investigation, Guiney said.
Guiney said the system should be in place by the upcoming school year and that it will not replace any aides or security workers. Each school in the district features a building aide at the main entrance to sign guests and visitors in and out.
