School Superintendent Dr. Susan Guiney attributed the success of the students to good fiscal planning, community and staff support and cooperative efforts in all phases of the system's day-to-day operation.

"Mount Pleasant is a fabulous community and community support is very much appreciated," Guiney said in the year-end report to Mount Pleasant Daily Voice. "Groups such as the Education Foundation, the PTAs, and the Westlake Athletic Club, have donated time and funding to our schools. The District is exceptionally grateful for the community's support of public education and its investment in the children of Mount Pleasant by its vote of confidence through the annual school budget."

Guiney said support of the school budget this year and next year helped the district maintain all programs and services for students while mindful of the cost to the community.

"Budgets are prepared collaboratively and with all students in mind," Guiney said. The district continues its work to achieve its strategic goal of "Learner Centered Classrooms" and maintains its partnership with the TC Readers and Writers' Workshop. Excellent professional development was provided to teachers in the areas of ELA (English language arts) and mathematics to meet the common core requirements."

Like many Westchester school districts, Mount Pleasant is working to maintain and improve its campuses, buildings and facilities.

"As part of the District's collaboratively developed and Board of Education approved Strategic Plan, the District has been carefully assessing the condition of the infrastructure in our schools as well as the overall condition of the Westlake campus," Guiney said.

The District's architect, KG&D, prepared a Buildings Condition Survey that is on the District website and there are plans under way to bring the Westlake campus up to 2014 standards as well as to be ready for the current students at Hawthorne and Columbus elementary schools in September.

Guiney said Westlake graduated its first in 1964 and Westlake Middle School received its first class in the 1970's.

"Most of the infrastructure and architecture of these two buildings is original to the 1960's and 1970's and needs to be addressed," Guiney said. "This year, the district held a Facilities Forum and subsequently, a Facilities Planning Committee met.The Board of Education will study and discuss moving forward over the summer months, and will articulate a plan to address these needs in the Fall."
