MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Mount Pleasant voters defeated three bond propositions on Wednesday that sought about $42 million in construction projects at Westlake High School and Middle School.

It was the second time in four months that Mount Pleasant voters turned down Westlake school construction proposals. School officials reduced the scale of the projects by about $14 million and divided the work into three bonds after voters defeated a bond totaling nearly $56 million in November 2014.

Proposition 1, which included about $35 million in Infrastructure, renovations and additions at the two schools was defeated by a vote of 1,292 to 951. Projects included upgrading old boilers and ventilation and adding a science wing at the high school. The cafeteria and physical education space also would have been renovated.

Proposition 2, which sought about $5 million in auditorium renovations, also was defeated by a vote of 1,405 to 754.

Proposition 3 for $2.6 million called for a new egress road and field reconstruction on the Westlake campus. It also lost by a vote of 1,401 to 741.

School officials said they would spend the next 10 weeks reassessing their next options, which could include borrowing over a longer term. Information on the next steps will be communicated to residents through the newsletter and will be available on the district website in the coming weeks, they said.
