New Bleachers Coming To Westlake Gridiron

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – On the way to Westlake High School in Thornwood, a quick look to the football field will show a vacant space. The old blue wooden bleachers on the far hill are no longer there. Mount Pleasant Schools Superintendent Susan Guiney said the district is replacing the bleachers with a new set that will add to the experience of watching a game.

“These bleachers will move down a little bit closer to the field, and they will also be fully handicap-accessible,” Guiney said. “So we hope that it will add to the school spirit of watching our Wildcats play.”

A construction crew is excavating the hill before laying down the foundation for the new bleachers. Guiney said the new bleachers will be able to fit about the same number of fans as the previous ones. The new bleachers are made of a material that will prevent students from painting over them, Guiney said. In a prank, a white number 12 was painted over the length of the old blue bleachers.

“We’re working out something with our principals to make sure that there’s some way in which the students can still express their school spirit, which is important to us,” Guiney said.

Guiney said the goal is to have the bleachers completed by Westlake's homecoming game in the fall. The district is discussing building a press box at the top of the new bleachers, although no plan for that is in place.
