According to an article in The Examiner, the new turf is made from a combination of coconut fiber and cork, different from the traditional plastic used on most artificial fields. Unlike plastic turf, the organic fibers must be watered occasionally to ensure the fibers stay moist and do not begin to fall apart. Pleasantville's renovations mark the first time the natural turf has been used on the eastern seaboard; it has been predominantly used on only West Coast fields.

The new fields were funded by a $3.5 million bond last year, and will be used by lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer teams. While the fields are also public property, lawmakers are encouraging residents to protect the investment and obey all posted rules and regulations.
