District happenings for the week of Jan. 19–24:

At Bedford Road School:

  • Tara Reay’s third graders performed “Character Matters” on the Little Theater stage for an audience of family, friends and their buddy class (K-Picco). The play reminded everyone about the importance of integrity, manners and kindness.
  • Fourth graders experienced several challenges people face in their day-to-day lives through the activities offered by Walk in My Shoes.
  • Third graders walked to the Jacob Burns Center to participate in the annual See, Hear, and Feel workshops. The students visit the center three times a year.
  • At the Jan. 22 “Math in Focus” Parent Night, K-6 teachers shared the math curriculum and the strategies they use when designing their lessons. Parents and teachers worked together to solve everyday math problems their children/students are given.

At the Middle School:

  • Eighth graders sat for midterm examinations from Jan.20-Jan.23
  • Sixth graders began a science unit on static electricity with a “Discovery Day,” exploring the properties of static electricity with balloons and using different types of materials to “charge” their balloons. They also described situations where static electricity is present in their everyday lives.
  • Erica Plouffe’s class held a bake sale to raise money for S.A.F.E. (Save A Future with Education). It is the fifth grade’s Global Awareness project, which helps children in Mexico obtain an education. In the following months, each fifth grade class will hold its own bake sale.
  • In Home Skills classes, seventh graders learned how food choices can affect one’s weight and health, while sixth graders have mastered their sewing skills and are completing their Quad 2 projects.
  • Student photos from the Photography Homebase are available here. The images reflect activities from the exploratory homebases that meet on Fridays, as well as personal ones submitted by the students.

At the High School:

  • Junior Julia Mulry received the Girl Scout Gold Award for a project she carried out under the supervision of special education teacher Susi Wilson.
  • Students in grades 9-12 sat for midterm examination from Jan. 20-Jan. 23
  • The Varsity Boys’ Winter Track team was one of 350 that competed Jan. 24 at the New Balance Games in Manhattan, one of the nation's most prestigious indoor track meets. In the 4x800 relay, Eric Hughes, JC Yahia, Eamon Coburn and Patrick Watts placed fifth with a time of 8:05.8, the team’s best time since 1974. They qualified for the Indoor National Championship in March and the Penn Relays in April. They also broke the school’s 40-year-old record in the 4x400, running it in 4:39.4. Their performance ranks them at 17 in the nation and also ensures them All-Westchester County Team honors.
