Scholars Bedonian, George Lead Westlake High School Class of 2014

THORNWOOD, N.Y. -- Garo Bedonian was valedictorian and Joshin George the salutatorian when the Westlake High School Class of 2014 graduated Friday, June 27.

The graduation was highlighted by a 50th reunion visit from the school's Class of 1964 for which 34 members attended this year's commencement. Prior to the graduation, a welcome reception was held for for the alumni and even some teachers, including  and the first principal of Westlake High School, John Whearty, who still lives in Thornwood. His granddaughter graduated Friday.

Bedonian is described by his guidance counselor as an “intellectually curious student with a high degree of integrity, determination, and strong work ethic.” His success in his challenging courses earned him a stellar Grade Point Average of 100 percent.

Bedonian has been inducted into the National Honor Society, Math and Spanish Honor Societies and has been named to the National Language Arts League and Principal’s Honor Roll and was named a 2014 National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He has been recognized for his outstanding achievement in Honors Biology, Geometry, AP Statistics and Pre-Calculus along with Physics, English Language Arts and Instrumental Music.

At Senior Awards Night this spring, Bedonian received the NYS Scholarship for Academic Excellence along with multiple Spanish and science department awards. He was a member of Math Club and Academic Team and varsity track and tennis teams and played alto saxophone in the school’s jazz and pep bands. 

Bedonian will attend Cooper Union for the Advancement of Math and Science to study engineering.

Salutatorian George has found success in all aspects of his studies and earned a 99.45 GPA though his schedule consisted of all honors and AP courses. He has been inducted into the National Honor Society, Westlake’s English and Spanish Honor Societies and was a recipient of the Harvard-Radcliffe Book Award.

Along with his outstanding academic record, George was a participant in the Academic and Science Olympiad Teams and is a member of the Principal’s Advisory Board and the Peer Advice and Leadership Service (PALS). In his sophomore year, Joshin was a 2013 HOBY Leadership Ambassador gaining leadership skills designed to help make a positive impact in his community.

George was one of 10 students to receive the Milly Kibrick Youth Service Award for his volunteer work with the National Center of Excellence for the Medical Consequences of Spinal Cord Injury earlier in the school year. He volunteers as a math and chemistry tutor and a teacher’s assistant at the Gurukulam School of Indian Arts and Culture in White Plains.

George will attend Macauley Honors College at City College in New York City in the fall and will major in Biomedical Engineering.
