THORNWOOD, N.Y. -- The Westlake High School Athletic Department in Thornwood announces that all eight fall varsity competition teams have been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as Scholar-Athlete Teams.
The scholar-athlete team award is given to teams whose combined GPA is 90 percent and higher.
The teams were congratulated by Athletic Director Donna Pirro at the December Board of Education meeting and were presented with NYSPHSA recognition certificates.
Scholar-athlete teams are: Boys' and Girls' Cross Country, Girls' Tennis, Girls' Swim and Dive, Football, Volleyball and Boys' and Girls' Soccer.
Additionally, the district congratulates sophomore Maeve McArdle who competed in the state finals in the 200 meter Individual Medley. She qualified with a time of 2:11:65.
The Westlake football team finished their season as Section 1 Class B champions and state-semifinalists. The 9-3 Wildcat defense held previously undefeated Nanuet and Marlboro teams to a total of five points in the section and quarterfinal playoff games.
Coach John Castellano was named the Section 1 "Coach of the Year" by the football coaches association.
