PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. With school back in session, many Pleasantville students are heading to the library after school. However, some students are not there to sit quietly and do their work.
Vivian Gufarotti is the assistant director at the Mount Pleasant Public Library, a frequent after-school hang out spot for Pleasantville students. Gufarotti said that despite being in contact with administrators in the Pleasantville Union Free School District, there's virtually nothing that can be done to move the students elsewhere.
"We can't expect the students to do anything since there's no bus pick up in Pleasantville and this is such a convenient spot for them since it's in a central location," Gufarotti said.
The Mount Pleasant Public Library is located directly in between the Pleasantville High School and middle school and the Bedford Road Elementary School. Once school is let out for the day, students will flock to the library. Gufarotti said the library will get somewhere between 35-45 students a day when schools get out.
Although some students will get homework done, others tend to socialize with friends and even use the outside grounds as a makeshift playground while waiting to be picked up by a parent. As a result, Gufarotti said the library has been forced to increase their staff to deal with the sometimes noisy students
"During the school year we have more staff on, including one person that is on duty specifically to monitor and make sure that the students keep their voices at a reasonable level," Gufarotti said.
Despite the occasional influxes of rowdy children, Gufarotti embraces the students and believes that the library can be a great place for them to learn.
"The library here has so many resources and the students can use it properly to their advantage, I think that's fantastic," she said.
