“Hosting STEMfest was a great opportunity for us to showcase our campus and to make the parents and others who visited aware of the good things our students are doing in programs like pre-engineering, commercial art and architecture and design,” said BOCES Principal Orande Daring.

Participating students demonstrated their scientific acumen at the second annual event dedicated to showcasing the significance of real-world science, math and engineering problem solving.

Projects encapsulated the main categories of Build It, Invent It, Research It and Code It. All projects were on display for around two hours for judges to examine.

The non-competitive event's primary goal was to encourage students in grades 5 through 8 to share their STEM field passion and projects and bring out their best.

“We wanted this to be fun and free-flowing and to have kids show off what they are doing,” said David Jacob, a regional science coordinator at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES and a member of the organizing committee.

Students explained the genesis of their ideas, their findings, what they could have done differently and what assistance they received during the research phase.

Project topics ranged from the effects of gravity on the solar system to how classical music affects plant growth.
