Weil is one of 162 finalists from Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties. It is expected that about half of the finalist will be awarded a Merit Scholarship.

"It's nice to be recognized," said Weil, who has been in the Valhalla School District since kindergarten, of his accomplishment.

Eleventh-grade students can compete for a spot in the competition based on their PSAT scores. They are also asked to write an essay for the scholarship. There were approximately 1.4 million students from 22,000 schools who entered the competition in 2014.

In school, Weil's favorite subject is math, and he hopes to major in mathematics at college this fall. Throughout his high school career, he has participated in the Academic Challenge Team, the Viking Gazette, the Environment Club, the Valhalla International Fund and the football team. He also interned as a research assistant at the Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains.

Weil was also the most recent Rotary Student of the Month, and participated in the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair in early March.
