VALHALLA, N.Y. Valhalla Middle School is holding a variety of events for Foreign Language Week including Latin dancing Tuesday in the school gym.
Two dancers from the Lorenz Latin Dance Studio in the Bronx demonstrated salsa dancing and instructed students on the moves.
Its a lesson in culture, and the kids enjoy it because they know some of the songs, said middle school Spanish teacher Roxanna Franquelli.
The New York State Association for Foreign Language Teachers recognizes March as Foreign Language Month and encourages schools to hold a foreign language event each year.
The Valhalla Middle School is holding events all week that support the schools foreign language instruction, which includes Spanish and Italian classes.
On Monday, students played Jeopardy, answering questions in the foreign language they study.
On Tuesday morning a parent showed students how to play scopa, an Italian card game.
Wednesday is food day, when students bring in a variety of foreign foods.
Thursday is crafts day.
Friday, students wear foreign language T-shirts, middle school science teacher Karen Martino will give a presentation on Peru, and students will watch an episode of I Love Lucy in Spanish.
All students are required to take foreign language at the middle school, except for special education students, Franquelli said.
Foreign Language Week is a celebration of the curriculum that helps students practice language skills and learn about foreign cultures, she said.
