Valhalla School Budget Passes, Adams Wins Contested Seat

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Voters passed a $43 million budget for the Valhalla Union Free School District on Tuesday by a wide margin, 519-277, while electing challenger James Adams to the school board.

Adams defeated incumbent William Rosenberg, 419-241.

Robert Ierace received 489 votes and Ronald Cavallo received 519, each winning  uncontested bids for seats on the board of education.

Valhalla Schools Superintendent Brenda Myers said she was quite pleased with the final result.

"We are very fortunate in Valhalla to have the parent and community support," Myers said. "They advocate for the children and this is what makes Valhalla a very special place."

The 2012-13 budget includes reductions of over $600,000 from last year's budget and falls within the state-mandated 2 percent tax levy cap. The district will eliminate a section of third grade at Kensico Elementary School as well as a part-time music teacher at Virginia Road School, multiple chaperones and a district-wide data-analysis position. The budget includes the addition of a new district health aide and a special education teacher at Virginia Road.

The estimated annual tax rates vary based on the state equalization rate for each community. In Greenburgh, tax rates will rise by 3.7 percent to about $545.70. In Mount Pleasant, tax rates will rise by 5.1 percent to $1,216.74. In North Castle, the tax rate will decrease by 2.1 percent, dropping to $809.07.

This was Adams' first run for the Board of Education. He is a 15-year resident of Valhalla and is a former board member of the Valhalla Jr. Vikings. This will be Rosenberg's third term on the Valhalla Schools Board of Education. He is currently the president of the district's Board of Education, on which he has served the past six years.

Ierace replaces William McGuinn, and Cavallo takes over Rosenberg's former seat on the board.
