The program was aimed at learning how to code and work with computers. The event took place districtwide after school at the elementary school and at the middle/high school. Overall, 76 students in grades four-12 learned how to code their first program or tried new languages and applications.

"My hope is that this sparks more interest in computer science among all of our students," said teacher Amy Fox. "It was a successful day for all."

The program was during Computer Science Education Week (Monday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 14), which promotes computer science to students of all ages.

Throughout the session, there was excitement in the rooms as the students settled into their seats. A list of age- and ability-appropriate activities was given to all students, allowing them to select one that interested them most. Once the students were ready to begin with their headphones on and sites loaded, a hush descended upon the room as students became engaged in their activities.

Toward the end of the hour, students excitedly showed their creations to their friends and shared how they accomplished it. When the hour came to an end, students asked if they could continue the coding work at home.

The day ended with smiles, stickers and certificates of completion for all. The Valhalla school district hopes that The Hour of Code sparks more interest in computer science for all students.
