MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. - Garo Bedonian, a Westlake High School senior, has been named a 2014 National Merit Semifinalist in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Bedonian is one of 16,000 students nationwide chosen as a semifinalist from more than 1.5 million juniors who took the 2012 PSAT exam.
To become a finalist, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, must be recommended by the school principal and must earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test performance.
National Merit Finalists will be notified of their selection in February, and are chosen based on skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Finalists are eligible to compete for 2,500 National Merit, 1,000 corporation and 4,500 college-sponsored scholarships that will be announced between April and July 2014.
A 2013 inductee to the National Honor Society, Bedonian also was Westlake’s recipient of the 2013 Columbia University Book Award for outstanding academic achievement and possessing an interest in research.
