Westlake High School Set To Unveil New Bleachers

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Just in time for the school’s big homecoming celebration, the new bleachers at Westlake High School’s main athletic field are going through some final tinkering and are set to open this weekend.

“We are thrilled for the project’s completion,” said Mount Pleasant Central School District Superintendent Susan Guiney, who added that the bleachers will open on Friday. “It’s a wonderful addition for our campus.”

Construction of the new bleachers began over the summer months. The new metal bleachers replaced the old wooden set in approximately the same location, adjacent to Westlake’s main athletic field and track. Guiney said the new bleachers should provide a safer environment for spectators as they are sturdier and also fully handicapped accessible, a feature that the old bleachers did not provide.

The bleachers will fit about the same amount of fans as the old set, but fans may notice one significant change.

“The new bleachers are much closer to the field now, they’re right up against the fence of the field,” Guiney said, as the old bleachers were further up the hill closer to the school’s parking lot.  “We wanted our parents and fans to have a more participatory experience.”

Homecoming festivities are already underway this week at Westlake and will be highlighted by a pep rally at the high school on Friday night at 7 p.m.  Then on Saturday, the homecoming football game will be held as the Westlake Wildcats take on Irvington High School at 2:30 p.m. where the bleachers will be utilized for the first time.
