“I loved the idea that the students got 10 days, some basic information, selected a genre and were told to ‘go and create a video,' said Westlake High's Media Video II teacher Claudia Abate. "They got the feel of being real filmmakers.”
"Schoolbound" by Mike Carpenter, Mike Hernandez, Spencer Knowles, Giuseppe Mastandrea, Christian Maldonado and Domenic Roma and "Sleep No More" by Marissa Carpentieri, Larry Gardner, Olivia Schettino, Joe Tagarelli and Danielle Walpole were chosen to be screened in the statewide finals this Thursday at the Regal Cinemas in New York City. Awards will be given for various categories and one film will win the "Best Overall Film" trophy.
The challenge was created by the non-profit 10 Day, Inc. and invites budding filmmakers to complete a three- to four-minute film using just their class time at school. In each state, students are given a set of parameters for the contest.
For the New York challenge, all students were assigned a character, backstory, line of dialogue and prop that had to appear in their films. Each team drew a genre from a hat. All student projects were critiqued by industry professionals.
The winning videos from each state will go on to compete in a nationwide contest. The films will be available for public view after the state finals.
