Catto was one of five students to receive the special ASM Materials Education Foundation Award. The certificate award recognizes the best materials engineering projects. Catto's engineering research project uses audio energy-based analysis and artificial neural networks to detect and classify engine faults. His project is a mix of computer science and mechanical engineering. Brunetto won a fourth-place medal in environmental science for his research project “Changes in Heavy Metal Contamination at Constitution Marsh.” Brunetto has been working with Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory to study the effects of dredging on a heavily contaminated area of the Hudson River. He received a medal and $25 from WESEF sponsor Acorda Therapeutics.
Attending her second WESEF competition, Marino took second place in the animal science category for her research project on controlling Varroa destructor mites in honeybee hives, which she has been conducting at Stone Barnes in Pocantico Hills. Marino received a silver medal and $75 from Acorda Therapeutics. Last year at WESEF, she placed third. In the fall, Marino will continue her research at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is one of the top-ranked and most highly regarded entomology departments in the country. "More than 420 students from 33 high schools in Westchester and Putnam counties attended the fair, which is the largest and most competitive science fair in the region," according to WESEF. “Nearly 300 professional scientists volunteered as judges. Students showcased their multiyear research science projects in a competitive venue featuring individual and team poster presentations to be judged by local experts in the fields of life science, physical science, environmental studies, psychology and engineering.”
