The Academy has worked with more than 1,000 players from Westchester County, New York City and Connecticut since its establishment seven years ago.

The sport is popular among NBA names, such as Mark Cuban and Mikael Prokerov - both recently purchased futsal franchises.

Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development, according to a release.

Adrian Rodriguez, has been running a futsal academy for youth and adult players in Westchester.

Asked why people don't know what it is, he gives the simplest answer. "Most people don't know what futsal is because they confuse it with the many different forms of soccer that are played in the states.”

Futsal is a lot like soccer as you are playing with your feet and shooting into a goal but that is where the similarities stop.

The playing surface, heavier ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

The Academy will be expanding its winter program to year-round.
