Regan, Boxer Reunite on WCC Coaching Staff

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Joe Regan was talking to current Westchester Community College wrestling coach Joe Boxer discussing the program when Boxer made a wise coaching decision.

Boxer asked Regan to be his assistant coach, and the former Mahopac wrestling standout agreed to join the staff.

“When I first spoke to Joe and he told me about the project, I thought it was great because Joe has the energy to put the time in and for the sport,” said Regan, a former standout Section 1 wrestler and current owner of Joe Regan Strength and Conditioning. “I told him I would help him and was there to support him. I an really happy to be a part of this.”

Regan and Boxer coached together before at Mahopac. The duo were assistant coaches for Tony Iasiello on the 2003 Mahopac team that won the Section 1 title. Their friendship goes back to their scholastic wrestling days. Both are 1995 graduates, Boxer from Fox Lane and Regan from Mahopac.

“Joe and I started going to freestyle tournaments all over the state in the 1990s,” Regan said. “I loved working with Joe and Tony that year at Mahopac. Joe and I were on the mat and we've always worked well together.”

Regan stayed on at Mahopac and was an assistant through 2007. He currently works with many Section 1 wrestlers through his business.

Boxer currently has 35 wrestlers working with the school team, which impressed Regan even more since it only has club status at this point. The men hope the team soon can take the next step up from club status to the junior college level.

“We are in to get to junior college status, become a top junior-college team and to win,” Regan said.
