THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Sherman Park opened play Sunday in the District 20 Little League Softball Minors Championship with a 12-7 win over visiting Hastings.

Emily Sardo led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, including a triple in the first inning. Pitcher Jamie Perfito rang up 11 strikeouts.

Sherman Park advances to a winners bracket semifinal at 8 p.m. Tuesday on its home field. Sherman Park will play the winner of Eastchester-Ardsley. Hastings moves into the losers bracket and will play at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gedney Field in White Plains.

“We were very aggressive on the base paths,” Sherman Park manager Joe Andrews said. “Jamie was around the plate and got the strikeouts when we needed them.”

Along with Sardo, Andrews cited Kristin Pierce for being on base three times and scoring two runs. Lia Poggiareale singled and scored in the first inning on Sardo's triple.

“The girls executed the game plan, and we are very happy and proud of them,” Andrews said. “We told the girls that we are looking forward to continuing our winning ways.”
