Sherman Park Baseball Slugs Its Way To 18-16 Win

WARWICK, N.Y. — The deficit looked insurmountable as Sherman Park trailed by 12 runs going into a possible last at bat Wednesday.

Sherman Park needed to score four runs against New Rochelle Central to avoid having the game end by the mercy rule. Rich Petrillo led off the inning with a walk to begin the rally. The team sent 18 batters to the plate, scored 14 runs and went on to an 18-16 win over the District 21 representative in a Section 4 Little League Baseball Minor's Championship game at Warwick Little League.

Sherman Park moves into the winners bracket final at 8 p.m. Friday against either Suffern (District 18) or Chester (District 19). New Rochelle Central plays Wappingers (District 17) in a losers bracket game at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Domenick Fensore delivered a two-run single and his bases-loaded triple gave Sherman Park the lead for good, 14-13.

"When I saw the pitch coming out of his hand, I wanted to drive the ball to the outfield so we could score more runs," said Fensore, who had three hits and six RBIs.

Along with Fensore's hits, T. J. Palma (three hits), Anthony Scaglione and Petrillo (three hits), the winning pitcher, each stroked two-run singles. Cole Sorby had an RBI single and drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning.

"I thought we were going to come back because we feel that with the team we have, we can do anything," said Petrillo, 11, a sixth-grader-to-be at Westlake Middle School. "When Domenick got the triple, that was a big moment for us."

Petrillo, who was making his first pitching appearance this summer, threw three and one-third innings and allowed three runs.

"Richie did an awesome job for us," Fensore said.

Jack Bruckner had three hits and three RBIs for New Rochelle Central. Conner Bradshaw, Tyler Bradshaw and Ricky Rieman had three hits each, and Connor Bradshaw also drove in two runs.
