Sherman Park Hits Way Into State Baseball Final

WARWICK, N.Y. – Richie Petrillo opened the third inning on Tuesday with a single – and his Sherman Park teammates kept following his lead.

Sherman Park,  consists of players from Hawthorne, Thornwood, Pleasantville and parts of Valhalla, amassed seven runs to take the lead in an eventual 16-6 win over South Shore (Staten Island) in the winner’s bracket final of the New York State Little League Baseball Minors Championship at Warwick Little League.

Sherman Park will play in the championship game at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against the winner of Saratoga National-South Shore. A Sherman Park victory, Wednesday would send it to the East Regional in Cranston, R.I., July 28 to Aug. 6.

“It was a continuation of what the boys have been doing for the last three weeks,” Sherman Park manager John Pugni said. “The boys have a lot of trust in each other.”

Consecutive singles by Petrillo, Vincent Spaziante, Domenick Fensore, Stephen Donato, Tommy Minafra and Anthony Scaglione resulted in runs. Salvatore Nardone and Joe Pennini drew bases-loaded walks adding two more runs to give Sherman Park an 8-5 lead.
