THORNWOOD, N.Y. - Winning the District 20 Little League Baseball Minors Championship was exciting, but Sherman Park went one better.
Sherman Park rallied from huge deficits to prevail in two games en route to winning the Section 4 Little League Baseball Minors Championship. Sherman Park will begin its quest for a state championship at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, when it opens against the Section 3-Section 6 winner in the New York State Little League Baseball Minors Championship at Warwick Little League. The six section champions will vie for a berth in the final at 8 p.m. on Monday. If a second game is needed, it will be played at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Sherman Park players are Domenick Fensore, Anthony Scaglione, T.J. Palma, Tommy Minafra, Salvatore Nardone, Stephen Donato, Salvatore Pugni, Joe Pennini, Richie Petrillo, Vincent Spaziante, Michael Mancuso, Kyle Saul, Cole Sorby and Chris Dimofski.
Winning the Section 4 title was a little more exciting, because we had to come back in every game, and there was always action, said Salvatore Pugni.
Sherman Park was trailing by 12 runs to New Rochelle Central before a 14-run fourth inning gave it the lead. Suffern jumped out to a six-run lead, and later a three-run advantage, before Sherman Park came back to win.
Sherman Park found itself having to fend off a Wappingers two-out rally in the sixth inning of the final before winning, 8-7.
The moment was exciting and nerve-wracking, Pugni said. It was exciting because our team and Wappingers was a good matchup. It was nerve-wracking because they were coming back with two outs and the tying run on third, with the score eight to seven. A single could have scored the run to tie the game.
Pugni said the team has been working hard in practice on batting, fielding and situational skills.//
