VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Opening the season with three losses had the Valhalla varsity girls basketball team fed up. Adding to the frustration was a loss to rival Westlake.
Valhalla received an opportunity to reverse the result when it hosted Westlake, Friday, and the Vikings responded with a 38-24 win at Kensico Elementary School. Senior guard Jade Fumarelli led Valhalla with a game-high 12 points. Kelsey Fritsch finished with six points and 12 rebounds and Rebecca Beckley chipped in with seven points. Valhallas defense was suffocating, limiting Westlake to one field goal apiece in the second and third quarters.
When we lost to them last week, they thought they were going to beat us three times because we are playing them three times, Fumarelli said. Today, we were really motivated because we were sick of losing, plus it was our first home game.
Valhalla keyed on Westlake center Tina Karaqi, holding her to nine points. Valhalla also did a better job on the boards, as opposed to the first meeting between the teams. We played them really tight defensively and we did not allow them to get the ball down to her, said Fumarelli of Karaqi. They got a lot of rebounds from her in the first game. We did a good job of boxing her out and getting a lot of rebounds for ourselves.
Valhallas tenacity on the defensive glass was evident, especially during one sequence in the second quarter. After Alyssa Colantuno grabbed Valhallas fourth offensive rebound in the possession, she fed Beckley who swished a 3-pointer. This gave Valhalla a 17-10 lead.
Westlake went 11 minutes without a field goal, spanning the second and third quarters before Karaqi scored with 2:50 left in the third.
