VALHALLA, N.Y. - The Valhalla Jr. Vikings set aside their pads and helmets on Sept 16, after a morning of football to take part in a head-shaving fund-raiser to benefit St. Baldric's Day at the Valhalla Fire Company No. 1 station.
Each of the football players stepped up to have his head shaved after offering to part with his hair for donations for pediatric cancer research totalling nearly $20,000, according to Fire Chief Tom McCarthy, organizer of the event.
Earlier in the day, the Vikings took on their local rival Westlake Wildcats and a team from Tarrytown beginning with the club's flag football team, which lost a close game to Tarrytown. Antonis Paloungos was outstanding on defense in the loss, stopping a number of runs that were headed for the end zone
Valhalla 13, Westlake 0
In the second game of the day, the third- and fourth-graders handled the Westlake team by a score of 13-0. Danny Tammara led the way on the offensive side of the ball with Mahari Davis cleaning up on defense. "Big" Jack Sullivan anchored the front line and quarterback Cade Canas called the signals while leading the team on two long scoring drives.
Westlake Tops Valhalla 13-0
In the fifth- and sixth-grade contest, Westlake took the opening drive 60 yards in nine plays culminating in a touchdown and the teams battled evenly for the rest of the defensive struggle.
Joseph Pecora was outstanding from his linebacker position for Valhalla, as was lineman Brett Dolan. The only other error came in the closing seconds of the half when Westlake ran a screen pass for another score. From there forward the Vikes were outstanding, not allowing Westlake past midfield.
On offense, Valhalla tailback Sebastian Pacheco just couldn't break through the secondary for those long runs that have become his trademark. Quarterback Brody McGuinn, who connected with Ethan Brooks, Pecora, and Pacheco on six of eight passing, could not get the Vikings into the end zone.
