The NSCAA's Team Academic Award is reserved for teams where the members maintain at least a 3.25 grade point average for the entire school year. The combined GPA of the 18 players on Valhalla's team was 3.31.
This was the second year the team has earned this award.
Coach Sandro Prosperino called the 2015-2016 season the team's best ever.
"When you tie in the fact that the kids did a great job academically in the classroom, it speaks very highly of the students who go to Valhalla schools," he said.
Prosperino is also a special education teacher at Valhalla Middle School. He's currently in his 11th year of coaching varsity boys soccer in Valhalla.
The NSCAA is composed of more than 32,000 coaches around the world, including those who teach youth, high school, college and professional soccer teams.
The boys varsity soccer team is scheduled to play its first home game of the 2016 fall season on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Viking Stadium against Briarcliff High School. You can keep tabs on the schedules for all the Valhalla teams here, and view either a comprehensive calendar or sort by a single team.
