VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Madeline DeMilio's softball catching and hitting skills have been recognized this spring as the Valhalla star earned honors as the North Eastern Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Year.

DeMilio, a sophomore at SUNY Cobleskill and Valhalla High School graduate, is the first Fighting Tiger team member to earn conference Player of the Year  since the college joined the NEAC in 2008.

After earning NEAC Rookie of the Year in 2013, DeMilio was named to the NEAC first team for the second consecutive year by being the top leadoff hitter in the conference this year. She led the team in batting average at .516, on-base percentage at .546, hits with 47, triples with eight and in slugging percentage at .901.

DeMilio had 10 doubles, eight triples and three home runs, drove in 19 runs and scored 34. She also showed her speed by stealing 10 bases in 12 attempts. On defense from the catching position, she had an impressive .990 fielding average while throwing out a league-high 10 base runners this season.

“Maddy is like having Ricky Henderson leading off because she can get on base a number of different ways, then steal bases, score runs or drive in runs with extra base hits when people are in scoring position," Tiger coach Mike Jorgensen said. "Defensively, she is like having a Molina (Major League baseball catchers) brother behind the plate because she calls a good game, fields her position exceptionally well and that throwing arm makes stealing a base a run at your own risk situation."

The Fighting Tigers posted an 18-6 overall record this season including a program best 16-4 conference record to earn the first NEAC North Division Championship in program history and the right to host the conference’s championship from May 2 through May 4 at the college’s Fighting Tiger Park.
