VALHALLA, N.Y. – The Westchester Community College Vikings won the NJCAA Region XV Tournament this weekend after they teetered on the brink of elimination with a loss in the first game.
The Dutchess Falcons beat WCC, 4-2, in extra innings on Friday to force the Vikings into an elimination game against Ulster on Saturday. The Vikings then won both games of a doubleheader that day. They defeated Ulster, 7-0, in the loser’s bracket and then knocked out Dutchess with a 9-4 win to set up the championship round against top-seeded Sullivan on Sunday.
WCC scored an 8-4 win in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader behind the pitching of former Fox Lane High School pitcher Andrew Rosenbaum. Alan Carey then pitched on two days rest and led the Vikings to a 9-5 win and the championship. WCC will play in the District Tournament in New England next week.
WCC’s softball team ended its regular season by splitting a doubleheader with Suffolk on April 27. The Vikings then moved on to the Region XV Tournament as the fourth seed and defeated Ulster in the first round on May 1.They then lost to top-seeded Dutchess and upset Suffolk on Friday to set up a Saturday showdown with No. 2 Nassau, whom they defeated, 3-1 to advance to the championship game against Dutchess.
Dutchess knocked off WCC, 4-1, to claim the title. WCC’s Shannon Spooner, Nicole Angelo, Stephanie Gaudinier and Carolyn Farmer made the All-Tournament Team.
The Vikings finished fourth in the Nassau Tournament at Eisenhower Red Course on Long Island on April 1 with a team score of 409. Former New Rochelle High School golfer Anthony Siguil led the way with an 86.
On May 3, the Vikings finished third at the Sullivan Tournament at Tarry Brae Golf Course in South Fallsburg with a team score of 361. Manny Cervantes, formerly of Port Chester High School, shot am 86 to lead the team.
WCC finished the regular season fourth in the Mid-Hudson Conference. Siguil made the All Mid-Hudson Conference Team.
