Westlake Football Looks To Even Season Record

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – The Westlake High School football team will try to get back to .500 for the season when it travels to Kennedy Catholic at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Byram Hills Bobcats shut out the Wildcats, 10-0, in week three to drop Westlake to 1-2 on the season. Westlake lost its season opener to Our Lady of Lourdes, 34-25, but then blew out Roosevelt, 47-12, in week two.

The running game has been Westlake’s bread and butter this season, but the Bobcats never let the Wildcats get going last week. The Byram Hills defense swarmed all over Westlake and forced a couple of turnovers.

Skylar Simon recorded two sacks against Westlake, while Connor Morley hauled in an interception and Paul Schuman recovered a fumble.

Westlake also had a poor day on defense as it surrendered 153 rushing yards to Byram Hills’ senior running back Brandon Rosen, including a 55-yard score in the first quarter.

The Wildcats get a break against winless Kennedy. Westlake faced Byram Hills, a Class A opponent, and held its own and will now face the Gaels, a Class C opponent.

Kennedy is 0-3 under new head coach Severino Sangro and has surrendered 74 points in three games thus far. The Gaels have not fared much better on offense, as they have only scored 24 points and were shut out by Ardsley in the season opener.

The corps of Westlake running backs, led by senior Dan Bassi, likely will be the point of focus for the Wildcats Saturday. Head coach Rich Hennessy said earlier in the season the offensive line and tailbacks were points of strength for the team and he would emphasize the ground game.

Kennedy has struggled to stop its opponent from scoring points in two of its three games this season and the same could be true Saturday.
